CHEIRO'S LANGUAGE OF THE HAND: COMPLETE PRACTICAL WORK ON THE SCIENCES OF CHEIROGNOMY AND CHEIROMANCY, CONTAINING THE SYSTEM, RULES AND EXPERIENCE OF CHEIRO THE PALMIST

Book Details + Condition: The Transatlantic Publishing Company (New York and London). Special Revised Fifth Edition, 1895. Hardcover with decorated boards. 194 pages with Appendix. Includes 55 full-page illustrations and over 250 engravings, as well as drawings of the seven types by Theo Doré. A well known and comprehensive guide to palmistry, written by the renowned palmist, Cheiro (pseudonym for William John Warner). The book delves into the art of reading palms, providing detailed explanations of the various lines, mounts, and markings that can be found on the hand. It covers topics such as the significance of the shape of the hand, the meaning of different fingers, and the interpretation of various symbols and signs. Cheiro also includes a section on the history of palmistry, as well as anecdotes and case studies from his own experiences as a palmist. Palmistry readings of famous hands are presented, as well as "normal" and "abnormal" hands taken from life, including: Madame Sarah Bernhardt, Mark Twain, Mrs. Annie Besant, The Swami Vivekananda and many others.

A highly uncommon copy, inscribed and signed by the author. The first inscription on the front free endpaper reads: "To Jacqueline H. Cola (?): With special regards, Cheiro. Atlantic Ocean off Cape Henry. April 3rd 1896." (Also included is a signature in plate, to the frontisportrait.) A very scarce inscribed edition, with firm binding; rubbed corners and edges; wear to boards, with extensive rubbing present (common with these editions); cloth covering a bit loose on the boards (also not uncommon); old water damage to rear board, with warping to last quarter of the interior pages; staining to spine, with chafed ends; interior is clean and free of markings, save Cheiro's inscription to the ffep.
