MAGICK IN THEORY AND PRACTICE [ALSO KNOWN AS BOOK 4. PART III.]

Book Details + Condition: Lecram Press (Paris), 1929. [London: Mandrake Press/Foyles, 1930.] The elusive First Subscriber’s Edition / Second State, with a very rare dust jacket. Hardcover. Quarto (10" x 8"), xxxiv + 436 pages. Maroon cloth with gilt title (etc) to spine, top edge is tinted red. Illustrated with b&w diagrams. The first hardbound edition of Crowley's magnum opus, "Magick in Theory and Practice," also known as Book 4. Part III. The book explains the Thelema system of religious philosophy. There are two states of the Subscriber's edition: The first state, and most common is the buckram. The second and much less common is red cloth, with a red stained top edge (which is this copy currently for sale). Internally, both are the same. Crowley originally had the book printed in Paris in four parts, each in paper wrappers, and with an additional color plate. Shortly after publication, he had a large number of copies shipped from France to Britain, where the plate was removed, the title page replaced, and the copies disbound and rebound in a durable cloth to make this "Subscriber's Edition".

An increasingly scarce copy with the rare dust jacket, in very good condition. Firm binding; minor shelf wear to boards; toning to endpapers; interior is clean and free of markings. Original dust jacket has some fading, price cut out on spine, and tear to rear cover; it is now protected with a mylar cover. All books are carefully packed, and shipped in boxes.
