SALOME
Book Details + Condition: Three Sirens Press (New York). First and Limited Edition by this publisher, 1920 (nd). Hardcover. 120 pages. This is copy #569 of 1500 of Oscar Wilde's celebrated one-act tragedy, originally written in French in 1891, and based on the biblical story of Salome and her mother Herodias. Includes the 16 beautiful and famous Art Deco drawings by Aubrey Beardsley. Wilde's play was prohibited from public performance in England due to its depiction of biblical characters, but was published in both French and English. It tells the story of Princess Salome's obsessive desire for the imprisoned prophet Jokanaan (John the Baptist), her seductive "Dance of the Seven Veils" for her stepfather King Herod, and her ultimate, horrifying demand for Jokanaan's head, which leads to her own death.
