Two volumes in one: 252pp, 186pp. Text by Joseph Mery. First edition of this posthumous work, illustrated with 13 beautiful hand-colored, steel-engraved plates by J.J. Grandville. Each with their original tissue guards still present. The lovely engravings depict celestial stars - personified as women in mid-19th century fashion. Published posthumously, this is Grandville's last work which was done in 1847, before he died in an asylum. Missing the first out of two frontispieces. Also missing pages 51 - 54, with plate that would have been page 52. Firm binding; rubbed corners and edges; bumped corners and spine ends; wear to boards, with heavy rubbing present; small note from 1898 to ffep; interior is otherwise clean and free of markings.
