First edition from 1936 of "Farm On the Hill" by Madeline Darrough Horn, in overall well preserved condition. Scribner's "A" present on copyright page. With 8 illustrations by the iconic American Depression Gothic artist, Grant Wood. The boards and binding are solid and tight, with minimal shelfwear. The pages and Grant Wood illustrations are bright, colorful, crisp and clean. The very scarce dust jacket has tears and chipping but holds the book firmly; it remains uncut, with the original price still present. A children's book with Grant Wood's very scarce illustrations, as he did not illustrate many books — much less those which survived. Grant DeVolson Wood (February 13, 1891 – February 12, 1942) was an American painter best known for his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest, particularly "American Gothic," an iconic painting of the 20th century. Wood is associated with the American movement of Regionalism, which was primarily situated in the Midwest, and advanced figurative painting of rural American themes in an aggressive rejection of European abstraction.
