William Gifford (1756 - 1826) was a literary critic and editor. The work is Gifford's two poetical satires on the Della Cruscan school of English poetry. The titles are taken from those of two inferior poets mentioned in Virgil's Ecologues, iii.9. The Baviad was an attack on the Della Cruscan, a radical sentimentalist movement of poetry. It was followed up with The Maeviad in 1795, this time criticizing some minor dramatists of the time.
