Beautiful first edition from 1899 of LITERARY HAUNTS & HOMES OF AMERICAN AUTHORS, in well preserved condition. The boards and binding are solid and tight save for light shelfwear. The pages are crisp and clean. Bookplate present on inside front board. 227 pages, with illustrations. Lovely full tan polished calf leather binding with gilt and raised bands on spine, and matching marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt and all others untrimmed. The book details literary travels
(travelogue about author's homes or locations mentioned in novels or poetry)
that were popular at the end of the 19th century. These titles were written by
Theodore F. Wolfe, a noted physician-surgeon who served in the Army of the
Potomac and later established a lucrative practice in New Jersey as a police
surgeon and a surgeon for the Pennsylvania Railroad. When Dr. Wolfe retired he
personally traveled to the homes and haunts of some of his favorite authors,
and published books on his jaunts. The books won a large audience and went
through numerous editions. The first publication, Literary Haunts & Homes
of American Authors, is concerned with the New York group of authors including:
Bryant, Cooper, Greeley, Halleck, Irving, Poe, Bayard Taylor, among others.
There is a section on the Connecticut River school: Eugene Field, Mark Twain,
Warner, and James Whitcomb Whittier, among others, There is a section on The
Homes and Haunts of Poe as well as Irving’s Sunnyside and Sleepy Hollow.
Kipling Abodes and Environs are explored.
