Spence was a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, and Vice-President of the Scottish Anthropological and Folklore Society. [Courtesy Wikipedia] This is a scarce first edition of this work. The antique volume is bound in tan cloth covers with stamped blue lettering/ornamentation on the spine and front cover. There is moderate rubbing and toning to the exterior, heaviest at the corners and edges. The binding is solid. The stamp of the Devon Library is visible on the front flyleaf. The pages show mild to moderate age toning with scattered light marginal spotting/foxing. The boards and binding are solid and tight. A very rare first edition, first printing occult fictional work by a famous Scottish occult scholar.
