UNCLE REMUS: HIS SONGS AND HIS SAYINGS, THE FOLK-LORE OF THE OLD PLANTATION

Book Details + Condition: D. Appleton and Company (New York). First Edition, 1881. Hardcover. 231 pages. First edition of the well-known collection of stories regarding the fictional Uncle Remus, a character developed by the author to share stories told to him by African Americans in the Reconstruction period in the American Southeast. Much of the content is based on the Br'er Rabbit figure of African American and Caribbean folklore. The stories from this volume and its successors were adapted into popular Disney movie Song of the South in 1946. This edition features illustrations by Frederick S. Church and James H. Moser, both American artists who primarily depicted nature and animals in their work. Red cloth covers with gilt-embossed Br'er Rabbit image to front. Interior hinges cracked but binding remains firm; rubbed corners and edges; wear to boards, with some areas of discoloration; darkening to spine; chipping to spine ends; chipping to rear endpaper; interior is clean and free of markings.
