It starts in a crowded church - but then the streets are deserted and there are only 8 people within the book. The characters are wonderfully described; almost archetypes in their grandness. A story of love, murder and obsession, the search for eternal life, the nature of magic and hypnotism. An overall firm and clean copy, with tight binding; rubbed corners and edges; light wear to boards; slight lean to book; interior is clean and free of markings save owner's info (from 1892) on front free endpaper and light periodic foxing.
