MORWYN, OR THE VENGEANCE OF GOD

Book Details + Condition: Arno Press (New York). First Edition thus, 1976. Part of Arno Press' hard-to-find "Supernatural & Occult Fiction" collection. Facsimile reprint of the original publication by John Cowper Powys, originally released in 1937. Hardcover with purple boards and silver titling to front and spine. 322 pages. The author originally wanted to call his novel 'Hell'. Powys was a fervent opponent of vivisection, 'man's most vicious cruelty', and here, in this strange fantasy, he gives full vent to his feelings. The main adventures are set in Hell where the narrator, not named but clearly based on Powys himself, his dog Black Peter, Morwyn, his new love and her father, a vivisector find themselves hurled after a cataclysm on a Welsh mountainside. The infernal adventures and encounters are virtuoso displays of Powys' extraordinary knowledge of the mythical underworld. "Unique epic fantasy of a descent into Hell, a scientific nightmare devoted to the study of pain. Powys's vision is a bizarre synthesis of Dante's Inferno, the Fisher King legend, and his own personal obsessions, particularly his ambivalent fascination with sadistic tortures. A work of genius, peculiar and compelling." [Robert Knowlton. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction] Very scarce in this format.
