Hardcover. 331 pages. Three-quarters red leather binding with gilt embossed graphic and text to cover and spine. Volume of field-collected Indian folktales, compiled and edited by English author Mary Frere, who is known for her works regarding India. Features four full-page color plates, as well as smaller in-text illustrations by the author's sister Catherine Frances Frere, and an introduction by their father Henry Bartle Frere, who served as the Governor of Bombay for a period during the English occupation of India. A total of 24 stories are included, and a color-printed frontispiece portrays Chundun and Ranee, characters in an included story, from an engraving by British illustrator Josiah Wood Whymper. Firm binding; rubbed corners and edges; light wear to boards, with some discoloration; interior is clean and free of markings save light foxing to first few pages.
