Arthur Hill, with Introduction by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Original green cloth lettered in black on spine & front board. John Arthur Hill (1872-1951) had an interest in Spiritualism and psychical research that developed around the turn of the century. He assisted the well-known British Spiritualist Sir Oliver Lodge with his work, and became a member of the Society for Psychical Research (London), serving on its committee from 1927-1935. In this work he provides a popular overview of Spiritualism. Chapter headings: Introductory; History of Spiritualism; The Society for Psychical Research; Automatic Writing: Case of Miss Curtis; Automatic Writing: Case of Dr Thornton, etc; Some Cases of Apparent Telepathy or Clairvoyance; Veridical Apparitions; The Subliminal Self. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle regarded Hill as an 'agnostic' who was on the path to conversion, and in his Introduction commended Hill's books to those who might share his initial uncertainties on the subject. Slight discoloration and wear to boards; normal age toning to pages; slight lean to book; a few dog-eared page corners; interior is clean and unmarked.
