Heavily embossed and decorated original cloth boards with gilt lettering (etc) on front and spine. The pages are clean but have naturally darkened over time, and remain very readable. The book is a collection of temperance stories detailing the lurid life of New York City, and first
appeared as a serial in the New York Tribune newspaper; each short story is
interconnected. It shows the melodramatic writing style popular of the day, with a firm message full of villainous protagonists, desperate and heartbreaking poverty, and general depravity.
