A VOYAGE TO THE MOON
Book Details + Condition: Doubleday and McClure Co (New York). First Edition by the publisher, 1899. Solid flexible covers - green with gilt to front and spine. Book measures 6" x 3.75". 219 pages; Illustrated. Cyrano de Bergerac's "stories of imaginary journeys to the Moon and Sun, published posthumously in 1656 and 1662, satirize 17th-century religious and astronomical beliefs, which saw man and the world as the centre of creation. Cyrano’s use of science helped to popularize new theories; but his principal aim was to ridicule authority, particularly in religion, and to encourage freethinking materialism" [Brittanica].
Interior hinges cracked and binding remains firm; age and wear to boards, with some discoloration; upper spine end bumped, with a small tear and missing area; rear endpaper and board cracking (a publishing issue, in all copies we've personally seen); two bookplates to front endpapers, with inked name and date to ffep; interior is otherwise clean and free of markings.
