Engraved frontis portrait of the author by Robert White after a painting by Godfrey Kneller. Volume by English author Sir Roger L'Estrange (b. 1616) containing English translations of Aesop's fables, as well as concise explanations of the moral of each fable and a reflection that further expounds upon the moral and contextualizes it within the Baroque period. A brief biography of Aesop (b. ca. 620 BCE), the Greek slave to whom the fables are credited, is included. An overall firm and clean copy: front board has been re-attached (common with these large, leather editions), and binding remains firm; light wear to leather, mainly at corners and edges; bookplate on inside front board; clean interior, free of markings save numerical notations on second blank page.
