MAX AND ZAN AND NICODEMUS: Or, A Silver Teaspoon And A Linen Napkin by M.A. Haynie Fisher — First Edition, 1896, African American / Slavery Children's Story
Publisher: W.J. Shuey, Dayton (1896)
A scarce 19th-century children's story about two children, Max and Zan, who help Nicodemus escape a cruel man who has convinced Nicodemus that he is still a slave after the Civil War. Through Max and Zan's efforts, Nicodemus finds freedom with some help from some "gifts" thrown from a car window, all against a backdrop of life in the Mountains of Tennessee during the Civil War Reconstruction. The book is in overall excellent condition. The boards and binding are solid and tight with very light shelf-wear. The pages are crisp and clean save for some spots of foxing on the corners of the inside boards and corresponding blank pages. A wonderful scarce and rare children's story of anti-slavery after the Civil War.
