MAZZAROTH; OR, THE CONSTELLATIONS and MIZRAIM; OR, THE ASTRONOMY OF EGYPT

Book Details + Condition: Rivingtons (London). Scarce First Edition, 1862. Hardcover with brown boards and gilt title tag on spine. One book, in two sections: MAZZAROTH is complete in four parts. Part I: 24pp; Part II: 136pp; Part III: 32pp; Part IV: 19pp. MIZRAIM includes a beautiful folding Planisphere of Dendera (and is 29pp). As well as completing a full 50 years of research for this book on the the origins of the symbolism of the constellations, Rolleston was also closely associated with the 'Clapham Saints' social justice movement led by Henry Thornton and William Wilberforce. Her contributions included building and running the first English infant schools in London and Nottinghamshire, before moving to the Lake District to complete her scholarly projects. Sadly she died while the final part of 'Mazzaroth' was being printed. Appears to be an old re-binding: Tight binding; light shelf wear to boards, with some fading; interior is clean and free of markings, save owner's name (1869) on title page and foxing to large fold-out illustration (and its corresponding page).
