LUCULLUS: THE FOOD OF THE FUTURE

Book Details + Condition: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Ltd (London). Scarce First Edition, 1926. Small hardcover with dust jacket, measuring 6.5" x 5". 77 pages, with 20 pages of Index. In the 1920s and 30s, a series of over one hundred books was published in London titled "Today & Tomorrow," which reflected on the future of science, technology and the arts. Predictably, it included a volume devoted to the future of food. In Olga Hartley and C.F. Leyel's "Lucullus: The Food of the Future", the authors predict a number of scientific advances that will lead to synthetic food, with a section called the Neo-Vegetarians evoking the possibility of plant consciousness. These books were tremendously influential, with many of the topics discussed and visions laid out into fiction, and impacting scientific research and technological innovations. A solid and clean copy of a scarce work, with tight binding; lightly rubbed corners and edges; slight warping to boards; interior is clean and free of markings. Very scarce dust jacket has some wear and old repairs, mainly at edges and on spine; it holds the book firmly.
