THE SATIRES, EPISTLES AND ART OF POETRY OF HORACE and THE ODES, EPODES, AND CARMEN SECULARE OF HORACE

Book Details + Condition: J. Oswald (London). First Edition, 1741 and 1743. Hardcover. Two volumes, 463 and 405 pages. The writings of Roman poet Horace, translated from the Latin to English by David Watson of St. Leonard's College, St. Andrew's. Both volumes are personalized by hand, apparently by John Lancaster, with pasted illustrations, inscriptions, and personal effects. The most recent artifacts included are newspaper clippings dating to 1948. Black and white and sepia illustrations both original and added throughout both volumes, created a scrapbook-like affect to this 1741 First Edition. Bookplate/clipping of John Lancaster in front, with Bilton Grange and a crest of arms. Lancaster was a noted iron and coal magnate during the mid-1800s in Warwickshire, England. Both volumes have been rebound, with dark green boards and gold-embossed spines. Very thick volumes, due to all the added pages, seemingly added expressly for the owner to paste in images. Also includes handwritten quotes on pages. A fascinating copy!
