Scarce copy of the journal kept by Frederika Charlotte Louise von Massow, Baroness Riedesel (1746 - 1808) on the Saratoga Campaign of the American Revolutionary War, in which her husband General Friedrich Riedesel fought. The Baroness was given permission to accompany the army on General Burgoyne's campaign to capture the city of Albany. She took refuge in the Marshall House near Saratoga, and recorded the battles and her experience in this celebrated diary. Includes presentation plate to inside front board - from Joel Munsell, noted American publisher, printer and author (and includes an edit to the date of said plate); Munsell was the publisher of this first edition. Firm binding; rubbed corners and edges; wear to boards, with some discoloration present; lean to book; sunning to spine, with chipping to ends; notation to ffep and copyright page; foxing to frontis and title page; interior is otherwise clean and free of markings, save the occasional age spotting.
