THE BOOK OF JASHER: ONE OF THE SACRED BOOKS OF THE BIBLE, LONG LOST OR UNDISCOVERED. Now Offered in Photographic Reproduction of the Version of Alcuin.
Book Details + Condition: Printed for the editor, by Philip Rose (Bristol), 1829. To which is prefixed, various readings, and a preliminary dissertation, proving the authenticity of the work. Translated into English from the Hebrew, by Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus, of Britain, abbot of Canterbury, who went on a pilgrimage into the Holy Land, and Persia, where he discovered this volume, in the city of Gazna. THE BOOK OF JASHER is one of the long-lost, and long-sought for, sacred books which should have been included among the other books of the Bible but which was not because the original manuscript could not be located. A highly important work, being the earliest of the "lost books" of the Bible, as well as probably the most reprinted. It is significant to all studies of pseudo-Judeo Christian movements, from Rosicrucians to the modern New Age movement. This edition is translated from the Hebrew edition "said to have been discovered in Jerusalem at its capture under Titus, and printed in Venice in 1613." Original paper-covered hard boards; measures 12" x 9.5". Shelf wear to boards; wear to spine edges, but binding remains tight and firm; text is clean and unmarked save owner note on inside front cover.
