Scottish Ballads; Collected and Illustrated ~ by Robert Chambers ~ First Edition / First Printing, 1829 ~ SCARCE
Publisher: William Tait, Edinburgh (1829)
Very rare first edition, first printing from 1829 of "The Scottish Ballads" by Robert Chambers, in very good overall condition. Three-quarters leather binding with top gilded edges. The boards and binding are solid and tight save for some shelf-wear. Previous owner's book plate on inside front board, and very old library catalog number on spine (this was a former seminary library edition). The pages are crisp and clean save for very small bookstore stamp on first blank page and roman numerals and embossing on the title page. The remaining pages are crisp and clean save for a random spot or two of foxing. The 'Scottish Ballads' is a selection that the author regarded as being the best and most representative of Scottish
ballads. The book is divided into the following sections: Historical
Ballads; Ballads Supposed to Refer to Real Circumstances in Private
Life; Romantic Ballads; and Imitations of the Ancient Ballads.
