Book Details + Condition: Scarce first edition from 1854 of "Hot Corn: Life Scenes in New York" by Solon Robinson. Illustrated by N. Orr. Heavily embossed and decorated original cloth boards with gilt lettering (etc) on front and spine. The boards and binding are solid and tight save for chipping and wear to the boards; please see pictures. Book has lean. The pages are clean but have naturally darkened over time, and remain very readable. The book is a collection of temperance stories detailing the lurid life of New York City, and first
appeared as a serial in the New York Tribune newspaper; each short story is
interconnected. It shows the melodramatic writing style popular of the day, with a firm message full of villainous protagonists, desperate and heartbreaking poverty, and general depravity.
