A LIFE OF WALT WHITMAN by H.B. Binns — 1st Edition 1st Printing HC 1905

Publisher: Methuen and Co., London (1905)

Wonderful biography from 1905, accompanied by photographic illustrations of Walt Whitman's life in a first edition, first printing volume. Green boards with gilt lettering on spine, black lettering and ruling on front board. 369 pages. The boards and binding are solid and tight save for slight shelf-wear. The pages are crisp and generally clean save for some sporadic foxing on some pages. Small scribble on inside front board (previous owner?); otherwise free of interior markings. Natural browning on second blank page and corresponding pre-title page. A fascinating early 20th century biography with outstanding photographic illustrations and examples of Whitman's life and work.

Review

Whitman's genius, passions, poetry, and androgynous sensibility entwined to create an exuberant life amid the turbulent American mid-nineteenth century. In vivid detail, Binns examines the mysterious selves of the enigmatic man who celebrated the freedom and dignity of the individual and sang the praises of democracy and the brotherhood of man.
