Calabashes & Kings: An Introduction to HAWAII - Porteus, 1945, HAWAIIAN MYTHS
Calabashes and Kings: An Introduction to Hawaii, by Stanley D. Porteus ~ First Edition ! First Printing, 1945 HC/DJ Illustrated
Publisher: Pacific Books, Palo Alto (1945)
In overall excellent condition. The boards and binding are solid and tight, and show little shelf-wear, save some fading to the boards. The pages are crisp, clean and in mint condition. There appears to be some old dampness to the bottom of the last few pages (which I only just now noticed). The uncut dust jacket still shows its original price of $3.50, and is in very good condition with little wear save wear to edges. A first edition, first printing by a very well known psychologist who provides a unique perspective on the development of Hawaii. Chapters include: "Popularizing the Pacific," "Myths and Missionaries," "Oahu: The Gathering Place," "Maui: Spreader of Light," and more.
