Book Details + Condition: Printed For C.J.G. & F. Rivington (London). First Edition, 1829. Scarce. Hardcover. 493 pages with 11 folding engraved plates at rear. Original embossed red/brown cloth boards, with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. One of the first comprehensive works on ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic translation. Chapters include: Necessity of Knowing the Language and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians; Difficulties of the Study of Egyptian Hieroglyphics; Hieroglyphic Alphabet, Numbers and Language Structure Using the Recent Discovery of the 'Rosetta Stone'; Anaglyphs - Remarkable Instances of the Figures of Israelites, Hykshos, and Negros; Some of The Principal Deities; Account of 32 Regions in Which the Souls of the Dead Might be Confined; and more. Personal copy of Joscelyn Godwin, with his bookplate on inside front board. Godwin is a well noted composer, musicologist, and translator, known for his work on ancient music, paganism and music in the occult. An overall firm and clean copy, with tight binding; rubbed corners, spine ends and edges; moderate wear to boards, with some fading at edges; approximately half of the fold-out plates have pencil notes and markings, which we decided to retain due to the book's provenance.
