Book Details + Condition: John W. Parker and Son (London). First Edition, 1856. Very scarce complete 2-volume set. Hardcover. Vol I: 404 pages; Vol II: 412 pages. Complete 2-volume set by English Congregationalist minister Robert Alfred Vaughan. Vaughan also wrote "The Witch of Endor and Other Poems", and learned many languages so that he could read primary source material on mysticism. Volume I is a treatise on mysticism, dating from early Asian and Hindu mysticism, Ancient Greek paganism and early Christianity, and German and Persian medieval mysticism. Volume II includes chapters on "Theosophy in the Age of the Reformation," "The Spanish Mystics," "Mysticism in England," and "Emanuel Swedenborg." Vol I: interior hinge cracked and wear to boards attached to outer hinge, but binding remains firm; wear to original covers, with some discoloration; rubbed corners and edges; chipped spine ends; small bookseller sticker on inside front board; pencilled-in biography of the author, facing title page; one page with inked lines in margins (in the Notes); discoloration to endpapers.
