ISLAND STORIES, Retold from St. Nicholas — 1923 — Vintage Island Life SOUTH PACIFIC, SCARCE
A wonderful and scarce “Island Stories: Retold from St. Nicholas." New York: The Century Co., 1923. It's a beautiful book, with dark blue boards and island / beach imagery. Font in light blue. 191 pages. This copy (which I’m unable to find elsewhere) is in good condition, with no interior markings. Slight fading to bottom of front board. Wonderful illustrations and photographs throughout the book. A collection of various authors, with chapter titles including: A Little Talk About the Philippine Islands; Impressions of the Hawaiian Islands; Porto (Puerto) Rico and Her First Fourth; A Tale of the Cannibal Islands; The Story of the Great Storm at Samoa… and much more, describing personal accounts of life in the islands. A lovely and rare find, describing life among the native peoples of various islands from Samoa to Hawaii to Puerto (Porto) Rico; a fascinating read. Shipwrecks, cannibalism, and early Hawaiian surfing — and much more.
