JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES: A STUDY, by Stuart Gilbert — First American Edition, 1931

Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf, New York (1931)

First American edition, first printing of "James Joyce's Ulysses: A Study," by Stuart Gilbert from 1931. Gilbert was friends with Joyce, who encouraged him to publish this critical review of "Ulysses." First published in London in 1930, and then America in 1931, Gilbert's book was published three years before the iconic "Ulysses" was allowed to be published in the United States. The boards and binding are solid and tight with some shelf-wear. The pages are crisp and clean save for previous owner's paste-down on inside front board and a folding crease on the first two blank pages. Pasted drawing of James Joyce on corresponding page to the Part I page, which also shows toning. 379 pages, with index.
