Published in 1851, with over 150 illustrations by the notable illustrator of "Alice in Wonderland" and other famous works. This is John Tenniel's first major work, profusely illustrated with a mass publication, enabling him to become recognized as a well noted English illustrator. Dark brown highly decorated embossed boards (what appears to be a spoonbill in a decorated star); 224 pages. The boards and binding are solid and tight, with rubbed corners and minor shelf-wear. The pages are crisp and clean save for some spots of foxing on a few of the pages. Previous owner's script signature on the first blank page. A solid, first edition, first printing of John Tenniel's first major work for your collection.
