LEAVES OF GRASS, Walt Whitman CONTROVERSIAL 3rd Ed Pirate Copy BANNED BOOK 1860
LEAVES OF GRASS by Walt Whitman ~ CONTROVERSIAL 3rd Edition Pirated BANNED BOOK 1860, Illustrated, Very Scarce
Publisher: Thayer and Eldridge, Boston (1860; PIRATED Copy)
Very rare, controversial third edition, most likely a pirated copy with stolen engraving plates. After the 1860 edition was printed, the plates were stolen from Whitman and a pirated edition started appearing for sale. Today, the controversy surrounding this edition adds to its collectible appeal. Dark brown embossed boards, with painted gilt writing on spine.
The boards and binding are in well preserved condition with very little shelf-wear. Previous owner's signature on the inside front board. The pages are crisp and clean, save for a very few spots of minor foxing on the first two blank pages and on the frontispiece. A few pages have straightened small dog-ear creases. Overall a beautiful and scarce find.
