Original dark brown boards with gilt on spine. Measures 6.25" x 4.25". Black-and-white illustrations throughout text. Includes early assessments of an automaton chess player and Charles Babbage's calculating machines, as well as optics, reading coins in the dark, etc. In good condition: binding is tight and solid; some shelf wear to boards and slight fading to spine; rubbed corners; inside board roughed up (as though there may have been a paste-down removed); sporadic darkening and foxing on pages; interior is free of writing, but foxing throughout.
