Very rare mid-nineteenth century edition of "The Life and Exploits of Don Quixote De La Mancha," by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra. Translated from the original Spanish by Charles Jarvis. Dated 1827 in illustrated title pages and 1828 in typographical title pages. Four illustrated title pages with vignettes by unknown engraver after designs by William Satchwell Leney (3 from New York: Huntington, 1814-15) and Isidro and Antonio Carnicero (1 from Madrid: Ibarra, 1782) and 4 chapter illustrations (placed as frontispieces) by unknown engraver after designs by Antonio Carnicero (2 from Madrid: Ibarra, 1780), José del Castillo (1 from Madrid: Ibarra, 1780) and Isidro and Antonio Carnicero (1 from Madrid: Ibarra, 1782). Xylographic copies after the plates engraved by Satchwell for New York: Huntington, 1814-15. [Cushing Memorial Library and Archives] Complete 4-volume set in full-leather binding. Each book measures 5"x3". For all volumes, the boards and binding are solid and tight save for some wear and minor chipping to the leather. The pages are crisp and clean save for a few spots of sporadic foxing in each volume. Previous owner's signature on the first blank page of each volume. A very scarce find of Cervantes' magnum opus — one of the greatest works in Western literature.
