Book Details + Condition: The Galleon Press, Inc. (New York). First Edition, 1937 (nd). Spiral-bound softcover with illustrated stiff wrappers, and decorated front cover.  Folio measuring 14" x 11". 42 pages. Unpaginated 5 + 37 plates. Firm binding; one small missing section to plastic comb; toning to covers, with small stain present (which does not bleed to interior); a few pages with more toning or age spotting, mainly to edges; interior is otherwise clean and free of markings. 

A collection of 37 mostly black-and-white photographic reproductions (many in photogravure) of works by a variety of acclaimed photographers of the first half of the 20th century. Photographers include: Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Arnold Genthe, Laura Gilpin, Rockwell Kent, Victor Keppler, and George Platt Lynes. A variety of themes are presented, including landscapes, portraits, fashion and advertising photography, street scenes, and fine art photography. As stated by Editor Heyworth Campbell in the introduction: "[F]our different processes of reproduction have been employed: Gravure, Letterpress, Aquatone and Four Color Process Printing. A variety of papers and inks has been used throughout, to make a total of thirteen variables in the manufacture of this single collection." The publication was intended to be the first volume in a photographic series that was never continued. Heyworth Campbell was an art director, and photo editor who served as a founding member of the Art Directors Club of New York. He also served as the art director for Condé Nast and for a time was among the leading editors of publishing design, layout, and typography. He also edited of a number of photography books in the 1930s.
