Book Details + Condition: Simpkin & Marshall, Stationers (London). Very scarce First Edition, 1843. 208 pages. Hardcover. Green boards, with pasted title (etc) to front board and spine. This is William J. Simmonite's first and only attempt to publish an Astrological and science magazine. The Scientific and Literary Messenger appeared initially monthly from January 1842. It lasted for just eight issues and was permanently canceled due to lack of support in 1843. The issues were then bound together without their original covers into a single continuously paginated work. From the first chapter: "This work is intended to be a miscellany of Astro-Meteorology, Astronomy, Phrenology, Geology, Mineralogy, Zodiacal Physiognomy, Medical Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, and every department of Astral Philosophy for the year, 1842." Extremely scarce. An overall firm and clean copy, with tight binding; wear to boards, with rubbing and discoloration; interior is clean and free of markings save owner's name on front free endpaper and normal age-toning to pages.
