A NEW CONSCIENCE ON AN ANCIENT EVIL, by Jane Addams- White Girls Sex Slave Trafficking 1913, RARE

Publisher: MacMillan and Co. New York (1913)

A rare, illustrated reporting of the abuses and violations which were inflicted upon young women, including rape and forced prostitution. Some of these violations occurred at the work place during the late 19th and early 20th century with the rise of the Industrial Revolution in Chicago. The book is in overall near mint condition. The boards and binding are solid and tight. The pages are crisp and clean. Previous owner's signature on the first blank page. A very interesting social history about the abuses of women in Chicago. Please see below for more information on this scarce book from the author's preface!

Description and Author's Preface

In her preface, Addams states "The following material, much of which has been published in McClure's Magazine, was written, not from the point of view of the expert, but because my own need for counter-knowledge to a bewildering mass of information which came to me through the Juvenile Protective Association of Chicago. The reports which its twenty field officers daily brought to its main office adjoining Hull House became to me a revelation of the dangers implicit in city conditions and of the allurements which are designedly placed around many young girls in order to draw them into an evil life."
