PHALLIC WORSHIP and INFLUENCE OF THE PHALLIC IDEA IN THE RELIGIONS OF ANTIQUITY
Book Details + Condition: J.W. Bouton (New York, NY). Second Edition, 1875. Hardcover. 98 pages. Pairing in one volume of two essays, both originally read before the Anthropological Society of London in 1870. The first essay is Irish archaeologist Hodder M. Westropp's "Phallic Worship", and the second is British anthropologist C. Staniland Wake's "Influence of the Phallic Idea in the Religions of Antiquity". The essays discuss artifacts and ancient religious practices connected to various literal and allegorical phallic representations. The wonderful illustrations found in this second edition were not present in the first edition, thus making it a more thorough edition. Introduction and Appendix by eccentric editor and American Theosophical scholar Alexander Wilder. Illustrated with several engravings throughout, including a frontispiece depicting the Hindu god Ganesh.

Firm binding; minor shelf wear to boards; 10 pp with pencilled (plain and red) underlining. Bookplate to inside front board - along with stamps to ffep, half-title, and title page (and to one other random page) - of Charles J. Carlotti, businessman, inventor and collector. All books are carefully packed, and shipped in boxes.
