Author's signature and date on the first blank page in Volume I. For both volumes: The boards and binding are solid and tight, with minor shelf-wear. The pages are crisp and clean save for two spots of foxing on the inside spine borders of the first blank page in Volume I, and some natural very slight discoloration on the outer fore-edge of both volumes. These seem to be an original printing issue. The dust jackets have overall minor wear and some small dog ears to the flaps of both the jackets. Both dust jackets remain uncut. Two small spots of ink staining from the book to the bottom of the dust jacket in Volume I. Volume I: 1820s-1870s, 964 pages; Volume II: 1880s-1930s, 1070 pages.
