Numerous wood-engraved illustrations throughout, largely portraits, including Edgar Allan Poe and Black Hawk. Fowler's very well known comprehensive book on Phrenology, which includes a section for a phrenological assessment to be performed by another person. In this case, Fowler personally attested to performing the analysis by signing and dating the title page, as well as inscribing his findings on the testing score sheets (which immediately follow the Preface). Fowler performed thousands of phrenological assessments partly as a promotional tool for those who purchased the book. The work explains the science of Phrenology and details numerous examples of head and facial characteristics as a way to determine a person's character, intelligence and vocational possibilities. Firm binding; light wear to boards, with a bit of discoloration present; toning to endpapers; interior is clean and free of markings, save the author's notes and findings.
