SUOMIRIA: A FANTASY
Book Details + Condition: Arno Press (New York). First Edition thus, 1976. Part of Arno Press' hard-to-find "Supernatural & Occult Fiction" collection. Facsimile reprint of the original publication by James Carnegie (Ninth Earl of Southesk), originally released in 1899. Hardcover with purple boards and silver titling to front and spine. 322 pages. The work is a story of magic, sorcery, fantastical creatures and love – with the element of fantasy. It is divided into two parts: In the first part, the protagonist, while wandering an unexplored forest in Scotland, is attacked by Ape-Goats (part giant ape and part goat). He is saved by a female Sphinx (Suomiria), and quickly falls in love with her. She then leads him to her home, in the interior of the Earth (“hollow Earth”), where she is transformed into a full human. He lives among the Sphinx race, but grows homesick for the surface. The second part of the book is quite different in style, leaving the fantasy element until the end.
