Book Details + Condition: Bradbury and Evans (London). Early Edition, 1839. Hardcover with marbled boards, measuring 7"x5". 512 pages. Numerous illustrations of flora and gardens. From the Preface: "The object with the author in undertaking The Flower Garden, was to explain in clean and intelligible language, first-the PRINCIPLES OF TASTE, which should guide the amateur gardener in laying out and planting his grounds; second, the PHYSIOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES on which the cultivation of every species of plant should be conducted; and thirdly, the best and most economical method of supplying a constant succession of flowers during, at least, three fourths of the year." Scarce copy of Victorian plant cultivation and garden design. Firm binding; rubbed corners and edges; wear to boards, with rubbing present; binding tape to spine; missing title page; occasional foxing and age-spotting; very old tape to one torn text page; interior text is clean and free of markings, save 1839 presentation note to front endpaper, and antique scripted note to rear endpaper. A bit of aged musty smell is present.
