Biography of American humor writer and early stand-up comedian Charles Farrar Browne, who went by the name of Artemus Ward. This volume features stories and anecdotes of the life of the humorist and his travels in the Americas, along with black-and-white illustrations and a hand-colored frontispiece. Browne was a favorite writer of United States president Abraham Lincoln and a friend of celebrated American writers Mark Twain and Walt Whitman. Interior hinges cracked, but binding remains firm; rubbing to extremities; some wear to original boards, with discoloration / scuffing; darkening to spine, whose cloth is fragile; book slightly cocked; interior is clean and free of markings, save light periodic foxing. The book is protected with a plastic cover.
