THE INDIAN BUDDHIST ICONOGRAPHY: MAINLY BASED ON THE SADHANAMALA AND COGNATE TANTRIC TEXTS OF RITUALS
Book Details + Condition: Firma K. L. Mukhopadhyay (Calcutta, India). Second Edition, 1968. Hardcover. 466 pages with Indices. Illustrated. Benoytosh Bhattacharyya's work is a foundational 1924 study on the visual forms of Buddhist deities in India, built mainly on the Sanskrit text SÄdhanamÄlÄ (also called SÄdhanamuccaya) and related tantric ritual texts. The author uses dhyÄnas (meditative visualizations and descriptions) from ancient manuscripts to accurately identify stone images, bronzes, and paintings, and combines museum artifacts and Nepalese monastery collections with traditional drawings created by local artists where physical sculptures were missing.
