THE MAN-WOLF AND OTHER TALES

Book Details + Condition: Arno Press (New York). First Edition thus, 1976. Part of Arno Press' hard-to-find "Supernatural & Occult Fiction" collection. By Emile Erckmann-Chatrian and Alexandre Chatrian. Facsimile reprint of the original publication, originally released in (circa) 1878. Hardcover with purple boards and silver titling to front and spine. 252 pages. An anthology of "The Man-Wolf" and six shorter works. "The Man-Wolf," ("Hugues-le-Loup," 1869) is a historical romance based in Germanic folklore, and remains one of the most important 19th-century werewolf stories. Erckmann (1822-99) and Chatrian (1826-90) began their writing partnership in the 1840s, and continued working together, producing plays, novels, and short stories. At the height of their powers they were known as 'the twins', and their works proved popular in England, where they began appearing (in translation) as early as 1865. After their deaths, however, they slipped into obscurity – and their work has remained difficult to find. Authors H.P. Lovecraft and M.R. James honored their “spectral fancies” and “first-rate romances”. Stories include:

- The Man-Wolf and Other Tales
- Myrtle
- Uncle Christian's Inheritance
- The Bear-Baiting
- The Scapegoat
- A Night in the Woods
- The Queen of the Bees
