Fine binding with full leather boards and embossed gilt; gilt to all edges. 22 pages. 1861 edition of the poem The May Queen, by English poet Lord Alfred Tennyson, who served as Queen Victoria's Poet Laureate in the 19th century. This edition features full-page hand-colored illuminations by Mrs. W.H.H. Hartley, who has inscribed the book with a dedication to Lady Georgiana Codrington in 1861. Includes an old typed note, stating: "Illuminated by Tennyson's friend Mrs W.H.H. Hartley. The present copy was bound especially for Mrs. Hartley to be presented to Lady Georgiana Codrington [sic] to whom the book is dedicated." Firm binding; rubbed corners and edges, and spine edges; light aging and wear to original leather; dedication on front endpaper; bit of corner missing to title pages; one page has old fold, lengthwise down page; last three pages with small (old) water mark to bottom edge; interior is clean and free of markings.
