SCIENCE VS. MODERN SPIRITUALISM: A TREATISE ON TURNING TABLES, THE SUPERNATURAL IN GENERAL, AND SPIRITS

Book Details + Condition: Kiggins and Kellogg Publishers (New York). First (English) Edition, 1857. Complete 2-volume set of hardcovers, with brown embossed cloth and gilt title (etc) to spine. Total of 939 pages (470, 469). Translated from the French of Count Agenor de Gasparin, by E.W. Robert, and with an Introduction by Rev. Robert Baird. A thorough study by one of the first mid-19th century paranormal investigators, who is best known for his experiments on the supernatural phenomena known as "table turning" or "table tipping", in which an unseen force creates motion with a table where several people are seated conducting a seance. Through his experiments, he concluded that the activity of table movements were the result of a physical force emanating from the bodies of the (live) sitters. The author explains this theory, which he terms "fluidic action". In the work he also investigates and conducts experiments on a wide range of other supernatural phenomena, including:

- The Supernatural in General
- False Miracles
- Spurious Sorcery
- Animal Magnetism
- Spirits
