Gardner was a prolific writer and lecturer in the Theosophic world of the early and middle 20th century. He established new Theosophical branches in in England and worked closely with Anne Bessant to create the first Theosophical University. He was the first to receive and review the Cottingley Fairy photographs. Gardner gave them to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who published them in the Strand Magazine. Together with noted Theosophist and clairvoyant, Jeffery Hobson, they proposed that photography was an accurate and effective method to capture on film mythical creatures. In later years, Gardner published a number of works including one which attempted to explain the phenomenon of UFO's in terms of Theosophy.
